Polar bear claws are thick and curved, sharp and strong so that polar bears can catch and hold prey—and depend on having good traction on slippery ice.

Fundraising

You can help polar bears through your own fundraising efforts!

Ideas for Kids
Ideas for Adults

We have a few ideas to help you get started. If you have other ideas, let us know!

Fundraising ideas for kids:

  • Pennies for Polar Bears. Collecting coins is a great way for a class or school to raise money, and it reduces the environmental impact of minting by putting coins back into circulation.
  • Swing‐a‐thons or Walk‐a‐thons. Host a swing / walk‐a‐thon and raise money by collecting pledges for each minute that’s spent swinging or distance walking.
  • Drink Pouch/Chip Bag Recycling. Did you know that you can clean up the environment and raise money to help polar bears at the same time? Form a brigade at the Terracycle website, www.terracycle.net, and start turning trash into cash!
  • Talent Shows. Organize a community or school talent show with the admission price donated to polar bear conservation.
  • Birthday Parties or Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. We're always touched by kids who ask for donations to help polar bears instead of gifts during special occasions like these.
  • Bake Sales/Locally‐Grown Garden Sale. Sell your goods in the local farmer’s market or school.
  • Car Washes. Show the community how it’s done. Wash the cars on a lawn! By washing your car on the lawn, you are providing a filter for the soapy water. Grass and other plants absorb the chemicals and other contaminants, thereby reducing the amount of pollutants that ends up in the storm drain. Raise money and educate at the same time!

Fundraising ideas for adults:

  • Silent Auctions. This idea works especially well during the holiday season as a party event. You can ask guests to clean out their closets and contribute auction items—it's a form of recycling! Many local businesses will donate goods or services as well.
  • Polar Plunges. Brrr. This definitely brings the Arctic home. We've had Polar Bear clubs collect pledges and jump into c‐o‐l‐d water in January or February, all to raise funds to help the bears. (Not into cold? You could always make this a summer event to help raise awareness about the warming Arctic.)
  • Slide Shows. Some of our members give talks on polar bears to clubs and organizations, donating the honorarium to PBI.
  • Raffles. With prizes ranging from a large plush polar bear to a special behind‐the‐scenes visit at a zoo, raffles are a great way to raise awareness as well as cash. Local businesses are often willing to donate a prize—or you could link your prize to an environmental theme, like free solar panels or a bike.
  • Benefit Concerts. Big or small, these are a great way to bring people together and raise money while having fun.
