Encounters between polar bears and people are expected to increase as the sea ice melts and the bears are driven ashore.
To help northern communities live safely with their bears, Polar Bears International has teamed up with WWF and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to conduct a workshop at Red Deer College in Canmore, Alberta, Canada, this November. The day-long session is part of the 3rd International Bear-People Conflicts Workshop, which traditionally covers brown and black bears. This year's conference was expanded to include polar bears given the changing situation in the Arctic.
The workshop will provide a forum for people working and volunteering on human-bear conflicts. So far, representatives from all five of the polar bear range states—Canada, the U.S. (Alaska), Norway, Russia, and Greenland—plan to attend.
