    Without any landmarks on the vast open ice, it seems that polar bears could lose their bearings. (No pun intended.) But they know right where to go when they smell a seal!

A Better Bear Trap

Human-polar bear conflicts are expected to increase as the sea ice melts and the bears are driven ashore. Bob Facklam of Montana has designed a better bear trap with a safety mechanism to prevent injury to cubs trying to follow their mother—or kids crawling inside.  Bear management programs in places like Churchill, Manitoba, include humane trapping and relocation efforts.
