Oil Spill Raises Concerns about Arctic Drilling

The major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has prompted concerns about drilling in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska by Shell Oil, despite assurances from U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar that no new drilling will take place until a review has been completed by May 28th. The Chukchi Sea is home to a polar bear subpopulation shared with Russia. Scientists are already concerned about sea ice losses in the region.
