Polar bears don’t believe in warm towels. They like to dry themselves by shaking off excess water and rubbing their fur in the snow. Matted, dirty, and wet fur is a poor insulator.

Rock Climbing Polar Bears

It's unusual behavior, but polar bears in Nunavut, Canada, have learned to climb down steep, rocky cliffs with nesting murre colonies to feed on chicks and eggs. Dr. Ian Stirling, one of our Scientific Advisors, had this to say about the sightings: "Although not well documented in the popular press or scientific literature, cliff climbing by polar bears on occasion is not unknown, it just isn't part of their every day behavior. Just the documentation is interesting for people to see. They are likely to do more of this as they get hungrier, but of course there is no information on how frequent such behavior might have been in the past so no real comparison can be made."
