Earth Hour, 8:30 – 9:30 PM, March 27
Our leaders seem to be in the dark about the dangers of climate change. This year they really need to get the message and you can help. Millions of people all over the world will show that they want action on carbon emissions.
On March 27th when 8:30 PM rolls around (your local time), flip the switch. Porch lights, inside lights, TV. Flip, flip, flip—all of them. Let the utility company see it. Let your politicians see it. Let the news media see it. Let the astronauts see it. Even let the aliens see it.
Call your friends and neighbors. Forward this email. Go house to house. Get everyone involved.
It's just an hour to show the world's concern, but we've put together a few neat things you can do while your demonstration is in progress.
Ten Things to Do in the Dark
- Link clubs or churches together to hold a candlelight vigil for polar bears. Let the media know.
- Grab your guitar, banjo or bongos. We've been singing in the dark for half a million years.
- Swap stories of ghosts, adventures and family (or a family of adventurous ghosts).
- Own a telescope or binoculars? Admire the moon and stars from your backyard.
- Enjoy a candlelit dinner party with friends.
- Play cards or board games by candle light. Imagine everyone in powdered wigs; it could be the 17th Century.
- See who can make the coolest shadow puppets by candle lighttry for a polar bear!
- Create flashlight monster faces for the kids.
- Go outside for a look at your electric meter. Darn! Is it still revolving? Try to find all the little reasons why.
- Discuss and speculate. With the present rate of polar melt, by 2100 the oceans will have risen three feet. Which cities will be lost? What will our children or grandchildren think of us? Will they know what a polar bear is?
And if none of these appeal, just listen...
It's something you haven't heard in years. No A/C or heater. No blah-blah-blah TV. No thumpah-thumpah music. No computer fan.
Just. Peaceful. Silence.
