Notes:

Having considered these and several other cases, we came up with these considerations. Firstly, anecdotal evidence (based upon conversatiops with some zookeepers) suggests that fractures occur more commonly in polar bears than other captive ursids. Secondly, many of the cases we considered (6 out of 11) involved cubs. Also, looking at our survey results, 6 out of 11 bears fractured their radius and/or ulna. Why would these bones be so commonly injured? Additionally, what is the possible significance of the fact that 3 of the 4 cases in this series involved the right forelimb? As no one has published any information on fracture repair in bears, what can we conclude about the various fixation options? And lastly, what do we make of the synostosis formation in these animals?
