Joanne Simmerson also addressed the training of bears involved in conducting this sort of research. The first things we think about are animal comfort and keeper safety during training sessions. All training and vaginal swabbing is done with total cooperation of the bears (no restraint, weight-bearing on front paws, so that they would not pivot toward the keeper doing the swabbing).
The first step is to orient the bear into a standing position.
