My name is Amy Pierce. I am a Large Carnivore Keeper at the Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I am responsible for the daily care of black bears, Andean bears, jaguar, cheetahs, snow leopards, lions, and Malayan tigers. Up until recently I also was responsible for the daily care of brown bears and polar bears. In my five years as a zoo keeper I took care of nine different polar bears, with the highlight of my career being in 2007 where I was able to work with three polar bear cubs at the Toledo Zoo. I grew up in Michigan and have lived in Alaska, Ohio, Oklahoma and Texas. I enjoy golfing, traveling, and hiking in my spare time.
I am looking forward to Leadership Camp and I have great expectations. First of all I hope to improve on my leadership skills and media skills. I hope to meet a lot of great people and make great connections. Being part of this wonderful experience will also give me the tools needed to spread the word about the plight of our fragile planet.
I hope that after participating in Leadership Camp that I will have a great impact on my community in Tulsa as well as back home in Michigan. I will start by leading by example and reduce my own carbon footprint. I have always lived by the mantra that if you can affect just one person you can change the world, but I hope to reach out to many others through keeper chats and media presentations about my first-hand experience.
