Step one – get to Winnipeg, not as straightforward a path as you would think. After a long day of travel, we gathered for our first meal together.
We talked about the sense of anticipation, the expectation before we journey. We've heard so much about the amazing experience that will transform us – from seeing our first bear in the wild, to being in a completely different and isolated environment.
It's not amazing yet, but we know we're never going to be the same people again, our lives are not going to be the same. Tonight our evening speakers were three past Teen Leadership Camp participants who continue to be stewards through the Actions, Communications, and Education outreach of the Manitoba Arctic Ambassadors Network (MAAN). It was inspiring to hear young people so motivated about changing the world, but at the same time we began to comprehend the challenge of conveying the experience to those who have not experienced it themselves.
We're here to learn how to be ambassadors. We're going to connect things visually. We hear about climate change—from our colleagues who work with golden frogs or aquarists who work with corals that are bleaching—all animals are being affected by this crisis. We get to see where it's being witnessed.
We're looking forward to getting to know each other, we have the commonality of being zookeepers and a passion for conservation. As we move forward we look to each for support and motivation.
