I have always been a person with many interests, but as a child, I loved animals and my enthusiasm and desire to protect them continues today. As my love for animals has grown, so has my desire to pursue a career involving them. It is my aspiration to pursue a degree in zoological medicine—combining my love of science and animals. I enjoy participating in the Cincinnati Zoo’s volunteer program for teens as well as shadowing at a local vet clinic.
I am a junior at South Dearborn High School and enjoy soccer, music, dancing, and photography. Currently, I play for my high school soccer team, participate in student government, serve as vice president of my class and am a part of Opening Knight Show Choir, a choral group that sings and dances competitively. Animals have always captivated me and I am very passionate about doing what I can to preserve and protect them.
My expectations for PBI Leadership Camp are high. I am not expecting five-star lodging or food, but my expectation for the experience as whole is definitely not mediocre. I feel that this camp will further my education and my perspective about global warming, and of course, polar bears. I expect to make memories that will last a lifetime, and make friends that have the same drive to protect wildlife as I do. My hope is that I will come home from the trip with new and fresh ideas on what I can do to help the environment. Personally, I have set the bar even higher for myself and how this camp will change me as a person. I want to be able to take what I will have seen and learned in Churchill, and apply it to make change back at home, not only for the polar bears, but for the world and its occupants as a whole. I also think that this trip will greatly change my perspective on what the world has to offer. I imagine seeing a polar bear and its environment is something you must experience in person to fully grasp. I truly believe that the experience will be more than a subtle reminder to me that this world is not just ours for the taking, and there are others on this planet besides us.
When I return home, I plan to influence and make an impact on my school, town, community, and I know it is possible to go even further than that! In five years time I definitely expect to see some change within my school and community. My hopes are that changes and decisions will have been made in our local waste management committee. Right now, our schools don’t recycle many products simply because we do not have a facility to take care of them! That needs to change, and in five years, I am sure it will. By then, hopefully a stable milk carton recycling program with be set up throughout all the schools in Dearborn County. I can see simple changes being made, such as more community cleaning days, more recycling programs, schools changing to CLF lightbulbs. Our schools will then be the example to all the others in the area. My promotion and example of recycling, conservation, and love for animals will have spread to individuals. More kids within the community will want to bring more change, and they will want to put their ideas into action as well. They won’t be afraid to try to make changes either. Adults and kids together will be more aware of their carbon footprint too. Everything will turn into a domino effect, all it takes is something, or someone to get it started.
