Allo!!!!!

My name is Rachael Vickery, but I also go by Rache for short. I’m 17 years old and am entering my LAST year of school at Springs Christian Academy. I live in the Rural Municipality of Springfield, Manitoba with my mom, dad and four siblings: Becky, Miranda, Madison, and Iain. I love to read, write, and enjoy the world past my doorstep. I swim, sail, kayak, canoe, and play the piano and trumpet. My favorite color is purple and I love to dance in the rain!

This past year my sisters and I participated in Project Polar Bear, an initiative of Polar Bears International, whose goal is to involve youth teams to educate the public and their peers about global climate change using the polar bear as its rallying point. Our team, The Canuck Nanooks (or Canadian Polar Bears), designed 11 major projects that encompassed reduction and awareness at an individual, school, and community level. We had the opportunity to share with thousands of people and reduced a total of 12 million tons of CO2! My sisters and I are continuing the second phase of our project this year and hope to take our "rural outlook" on reducing carbon footprints and expand it to the businesses and entrepreneurs (perhaps we’ll ask the Provincial Legislature to adopt a goat to mow the lawn!).

With Manitoba being home to 60 percent of the world’s polar bears, we are in a unique position to set the stage for showcasing our environmental responsibility. The Arctic is not a separate biome, but the canary in the coal mine for the rest of the world. As youth we have the energy and enthusiasm to make a difference! By continuing designing projects for project polar bear, and plugging into opportunities such as Leadership Camp I would say the next five years looks very bright! The possibilities are limited only by our imagination and the strength of our legs to bike from location to location (infinity miles per gallon!)

I’m very excited to be a part of this opportunity and am looking forward to sharing it with all of you.
