Mom—he’s teasing me! Cubs play to gain strength before they follow their mother to the ice to hunt before the summer ice break-up forces her ashore again.

Biography:

Hello!
My name is Christina Solbach. Im from Germany and I live in a small town called "R?srath" which is about 20 km east of Cologne. I'm 18 years old and Im attending my last year of High school at the "Freiherr-vom-Stein Gymnasium". My family does not consist of many members, it is just my mother, Uli, my brother, Max (21) and my grandma, Elfriede. I live with my mother, my dog and my cat in a nice flat. My hobbies are riding my horse, taking my dog for a walk, swimming, meeting friends, going out and reading.

I'm really looking forward participating in the polar bear science camp in which I hope to get to know nice people who share my interests! I would like to learn as much as possible about polar bears. For example about their way of life and how these animals cope with the non-natural impacts in their life (like global warming and tourism).

Another important thing for me is to get an idea of how to gaine knowledge about special things and not only to get information from the books but explore it by myself (on the whole: to really practise science). Furthermore it is my idea for the future to become a marinebiologist and I hope that the camp will support me in my decision. Another point which I?m really looking forward to is to get an idea of the arctic region which presents a completely different landscape, vegetation, temperatures and way of life from the area I know.

As far as I know I?m the only person in the camp whose motherlanguage is not English, so I hope I will get along with that and I will give my best at understanding and speaking English. I hope this could give you an overall impression and a rough overview of who I am and what my preferences are!!!

Today was amazing!!!!
I didn't know before that people can have so much luck at one day!!!
First the weather was very nice-sunny and not that windy-what was really important because of our Helicopterflight.
The flight itself was very funny- I felt like in a Ufo and I really enjoyed to see the very interesting landscape of the tundra which is really beautiful. There was much to learn about it!

Yesterday I had my first Interview with a reporter from which parts of it were on the news in the evening. That was an exciting experience!! (I didn't really like myself but probably thats how it is with everyone...)
Today we had a "travel-day" and flew from Winnipeg to Chuchill.
The flight to Churchill was definately more comftible than I expected it to be. The best of it was the landing:for the first time in my life I saw the tundra what was really amazing! The wideness, ponds and plants impressed me a lot!!
We are lucky that here is no snow at the moment so we have the chance to see all the tree-changing-coulers(here is a lot of white spruce)!
We finally arrived at the -as expected- smallest airport that I've ever seen. There is a polarbear pelt hanging on the wall. As I saw it I just started to understand the dimensions of a polarbear.
Furthermore we got our first impression of Chuchill during a walking-tour to the "main-center" which includes nearly everything the inhabitants need: the hospital (where is not everytime a dockter), the dentist (who is here for two weeks every two month), the Kindergarden, school and gym. That all is build in one complex and although it is small it seems to be well organised!
On the whole it was a exciting day and for me I have the feeling that "the trip" is REALLY starting right now!!!:-)

Today was a really special day for me because of some reasons.
It was my 19th birthday and I saw a polarbear for the first time in my life!!
I think this birthday was unique for me and couldn't have been better!!!
Seeing a polarbear for the first time was breathtaking. It was a mix of GREAT happiness, confusingness, trying hardly to see as much as possible, enjoying the moment and definately being very excited!!
For me the moment got filled I was so long looking forward to and I even forgot to take a picture...
This was definately the most exciting "thing" for me but there were also lot's of other great happenings today.
We drove around in a bus through the tundra visiting different very interesting things. The busride itself was a big experience because everything is totally new for me. The landscape with this totally different but very beautiful vegetation, the rocks and many ponds. It was really exciting for me to get an idea of the tundra and I really enjoied it. All this was suffered by gripping stories of Kelsy which made the whole thing complete!
Also the "aims" we drove to are very intersting. Most impressive for me was the first stop - an old science institution from 1970 where contested experiments were done. I felt the atmosphere was quite curious while thinking about what happened in this building and standing in front of these instruments.
Furthermore I could add that its really strange for me to live in Churchill because everywhere I go, if it's day or night, I'm wondering if there is a polarbear behind the next corner.

In addition I would really like to say "thank you" to everyone of our group!!!!I was looking forward to my birthday with mixed feelings but you changed them all into good ones!!!!!Thank you for all your effort, the presents and the "unforgettable" day you brang me!!!I will always think back to that!!!!
Thank you
yours Christina

Hello, it's Christina from Germany!
Now I'm here in Winnipeg for the second day.
At the moment of arrival I was really surprised of the good atmosphere and the positive energy and it wasn't the only moment but it hold on the whole time(!).
So everyone is motivated and open-minded and for me it is very interesting to get to know so many different people from completely different parts of the world.
In addition getting to know Robert and Carolyne really inspires me! Both of them have so much passion, energy and are so hard working for their aims and visions and are so hard trying to make everything possible for us-it's impressing.
Today we met two guest speakers (whose names are Robert R. Taylor and Clarence Tillinious) what was also very interesting.
Bob Taylor calles himself first a naturalist and secondly a photograph-and that's what he is!
He showed us photos of the plants and animals which he had make and which were definately amazing!
He is very kreative and has very good ideas. Most impressive for me was that in his long working time (50 years) nothing became routine.
He's really focused on the details of the nature and so also the viewers get the real imressing things and live the moment intensively with him.
A further reason for that are his stories he tells to every picture he made, like it was yesterday!!
Clarence Tillinious is also very interesting and very experienced.
He was really open to us and told us about his accident because of what he lost his right arm and after which he had the strongth to learn how to paint with his left arm.
From my point of view he is really plesant, has such a huge knowledge and so much to tell of all his experiences that I can learn a lot.
On the whole the most significant point I learned until now is that one of the most important thing for reaching something is: DOING IT WITH PASSION!!!
-more info as soon as possible:-)
yours Christina
