1. Eligibility
You don't have to buy or join anything to participate in Project Polar Bear. Your team must be made up of two (2) to three (3) teens aged 14 and 17 who are residents of Canada or the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico and other protectorates). Your team must have an adult advisor who is at least 21 years of age by October 1.

All participants must sign a release form and acknowledgement that you have read and understand the rules. Minors must have their parents’ permission to participate. It is the responsibility of the adult advisor to obtain parental permissions and submit completed forms to PBI within two weeks of the registration deadline on the current schedule.

If you are 13 but will turn 14 by December 31st of the year of the contest, you are eligible to participate. If you are 17 when you register for the Project Polar Bear challenge but will turn 18 during the year of the contest, you are eligible to participate.

To be eligible to win a prize, your entry must be completed and received by Polar Bears International on the format designated on the PBI website and/or our application form. Teams must register for the Contest by 11:59 p.m. Pacfic Time on the date noted on the current schedule. Your team's webpage updates and Project Polar Bear Success Reports must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on the day noted on the current schedule for the desired session. Our official deadline is kept in Pacific Time!

Members of Arctic Ambassador Centers sponsored teen programs and/or their staff are eligible to participate in this program.

All applicable federal, state, provincial, and local laws and regulations apply.

Any individual, who has been a Grand Prize Winner for Project Polar Bear OR was a representative at Leadership Camp in the past is precluded from winning prizes again but may participate.

Limit one entry per team. Team participants may only be a member of one team. Adult advisors may supervise more than one team.

2. Contest Period
The Contest period ends one minute before midnight (Pacific Time) on the day noted on the current schedule. All entries must be completed by the deadline to be eligible to win a prize.

Note: We encourge teams to continue with their projects after the deadline, but judging is based on the material completed by the deadline.

3. Scoring
We use the following criteria in judging and scoring entries:

  • Quality of work on your webpage/Success Report – 25%
  • Impact of your project – 25%
  • Data collection and reporting – 15% (how clearly and accurately your team defines your measurement tools and reports your data)
  • Effort and teamwork – 10% (the size, scope, and nature of your project and teamwork depicted in your webpage updates and Success Report)
  • Creativity – 25%

Finalists: At the end of the program, all completed projects will be judged. The top-scoring projects will be considered finalists and judged a second time to determine the top three high-scoring teams for recognition.

PBI Arctic Ambassador Centers may recognize participation and high-scoring teams as well as finalists.

The finalists are judged a second time. Finalist teams who do not finish in the top three scoring level will receive a prize package from PBI including products and a polar bear adoption. The Grand Prize of a trip to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, to participate in PBI Teen Leadership Camp, will be given to the highest scoring team. A trip to San Diego with special tours of San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld San Diego will be given to two Honorable Mention teams.

4. Awarding and Issuing Prizes for 2011-2012

Honorable Mention Prize: Members of the teams scoring second and third place along with their adult advisors are awarded round-trip airfare from the major airport nearest their homes to San Diego, California. Those teams will receive admission and VIP tours at the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld San Diego.

Grand Prize: The Grand Prize team receives a trip for the team and adult advisor to see polar bears in the wild in Churchill, Manitoba! This trip includes round-trip airfare to and from the major airport nearest their home to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada.

All prizes are awarded without warranty of any kind, express or implied (including, without limitation, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose).

If the high-scoring teams are unavailable to attend the events on the determined dates, the trip will be forfeited and no substitute trip will be provided, nor can it be transferred. All dates and travel arrangements are at the final discretion of PBI. If any team or team member does not agree to the final terms of any trip, the trip will be forfeited and no substitution or cash prize will be awarded.

5. Family Participation in Travel
Only the members of the team and one (1) adult advisor may particpate in the the Grand Prize trip to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada.

Family members may, at their own expense, participate in the trip to San Diego. Family members will be required to book their own hotel rooms and flights. PBI will provide information regarding participants’ travel arrangements in order to coordinate similar travel.

The VIP tours at the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld San Diego are only provided free-of-charge to participants and their adult advisor. Family members may visit these cultural institutions with the teams, but must pay separate admission and provide their own transportation. If PBI can arrange for group admission, we will do so but the family will be invoiced in advance to confirm ticket purchase. Familly members may join group meals but will be invoiced in advance for the cost of these events.

6. Website Publication
PBI posts the high-scoring projects on the PBI website (www.polarbearsinternational.org) through the end of the project year at a minimum. The content of all team webpages become the property of PBI to use without compensation or renumeration to anyone. As a team member, we encourage you to reference your pages on the PBI website for scholarship applications, college applications, or any other opportunity where the application process requires evidence of prior work and/or awards.

7. How to Enter
You must register your team with all team member names, addresses, and ages on the PBI website by the contest deadline. Individual team members and their parent(s)/guardian(s) must complete the form that acknowledges they have read and understand the rules and accept them. Adult advisors are responsible for this task in addition to signing and returning their own forms (download at the top of this page).

Once your team is verified, your team will be assigned a password-protected webpage associated with PBI's website so you can provide regular updates on your project.

Outline your project on the Project Polar Bear webpage at PolarBearsInternational.org (click on the Project Polar Bear logo). Your project must include a meaningful measurement tool to quantify the amount of reduction in energy consumption. Keep track of your actions and progress on your Project Polar Bear webpage and make regular updates. Collect before, during, and after data and pictures; make videos; record audio interviews with people—any way you decide is the best way to capture the essence of what you are doing. Complete your Project Polar Bear Success Report on your webpage and submit it by the deadline.

8. Contest Rules and Judging Criteria
The first round of judging will begin on or after February 1, 2012. Finalists will be determined by March 1, 2012. The second round of judging will occur during March, with high-scoring teams determined by April 1, 2012. Rank order of the first three teams will be announced by email in April 2012. Participants agree to delay sharing their statuses in any way until PBI has made the public announcement in our around Earth Day. Teams are encouraged to then share the official announcement through their local media and social media connections.

9. Disclaimer
Polar Bears International (hereinafter PBI) and any of its partners in this contest will not be responsible for: (a) any late, lost, misrouted, garbled, distorted or damaged transmissions or entries; (b) any Contest-related disruptions, injuries, losses, or damages caused by events associated with this contest by PBI or its partners; (c) any printing or typographical errors in any materials associated with the Contest; (d) telephone, electronic, hardware, software, network, Internet, or other computer- or communications-related malfunctions or failures; (d) if a communications failure or other disruption occurs near the deadline date for entries, it is up to the discretion of PBI and its partners to determine whether the deadline will be extended and to when; (e) PBI has the sole discretion of judging and all decisions are final without repeal or release of judging notes or final scores.

10. General Release
By entering the Contest, you release PBI, any of its respective parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees, and agencies (collectively, the "Released Parties") from any liability whatsoever, and waive any and all causes of action, related to any claims, costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising out of or in connection with the Contest or delivery, mis-delivery, acceptance, possession, use of or inability to use any prize (including, without limitation, claims, costs, injuries, losses, and damages related to personal injuries, death, damage to or destruction of property, rights of publicity or privacy, defamation or portrayal in a false light, whether intentional or unintentional), whether under a theory of contract, tort (including negligence), warranty or other theory.

11. Use of Contest Participants’ Name, Likeness, etc.
Except where prohibited by law, your entry into this Contest constitutes permission to use your name, address, likeness, and/or prize information, without limitation, for promotional purposes without further permission or compensation.

12. Affidavit & Release
As a condition of participating, teams will be required to execute and deliver to PBI a hard copy of the signed affidavit of eligibility and acceptance of these Official Rules and release of liability. Further, as a condition of being awarded any prize, except where prohibited by law, you will be required to execute a consent to the use of your name, address, likeness and/or prize information, without limitation, for promotional purposes without further permission or compensation. In addition, in order to participate in the travel and program, all participants will be required to sign releases for all contributing components of the travel and program.

13. Winners List, Rules Request
For a copy of these rules or the winners list, check our Project Polar Bear winners webpage or send a self-addressed, business-size envelope for the winners list after April 30, 2012 but before April 1, 2013 to:

PBI holds the copyright on the Contest and all accompanying materials. All rights reserved.

Use of PBI Logo and Name:

We strongly encourage teams to create t-shirts for their projects. An iron-on PBI logo will be provided to all team members to incorporate into their t-shirt design along with the contest title, Project Polar Bear. Participants agree to follow the guidelines included with the logo.

15. Miscellaneous
The Contest and these Official Rules will be governed, construed, and interpreted under the laws of the state of California. Entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and by the decisions of PBI, which are final and binding in all respects. PBI reserves the right to change these Official Rules at any time, in its sole discretion, and to suspend or cancel the Contest or any entrant's participation in the Contest should viruses, bugs, unauthorized human intervention, or other causes beyond PBI's control affect the administration, security or proper play of the Contest or PBI otherwise becomes (as determined in its sole discretion) incapable of running the Contest as planned. Entrants who violate these Official Rules, tamper with the operation of the Contest or engage in any conduct that is detrimental or unfair to PBI, the Contest or any other entrant (in each case as determined in PBI's sole discretion) are subject to disqualification from entry into the Contest.
