Summer vacations aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. This polar bear will look for other food sources—like walrus—until the sea ice re-forms and he can hunt for seals.

Zero Waste
Project Outline:

People in the Pacific Northwest have easy access to water, whether it is from a drinking fountain, a bathtub or the neighborhood pool. What many don’t realize is that water isn’t endless, and that it isn’t something that should be wasted. This is why direct action must be taken. We aim to directly reduce the amount of water wasted by households. We hope to partner with the Portland Water Bureau to get materials and supplies for water efficiency, and then use the information and materials during the weekends of the Oregon Zoo Zoolights Festival we will host a water savings table to teach the public and provide them the tools they need to increase water efficiency in their home. Examples include aerators for home faucets, water efficient showerheads, waterproof 5 minute timers for the shower, and toilet leak detection tablets (as well as information on fixing the leaks). Another huge message we would like to get across is how bad bottled water is for the environment and how much energy it takes to make and transport as well and encourage people to use reusable bottles. We will keep track of the number of people who agree to implement at least one of these measures to calculate our total water savings, as well as any calculable CO2 savings.
