This year the Enviro Club at Cape Breton Highlands Academy plans to continue with its strategy to drastically reduce the waste produced at our school. Last year we made a start by working on cafeteria policies, building a compost bin, and hosting a school clean-up/education day. This year, our goal is to completely revamp the whole school’s waste collection methods and policies, and in the process educate the school community about the impact of waste on the environment.
Though our school has attempted in the past to recycle, once students and staff discovered that in the end, all objects were going to landfills, they soon gave up on putting objects in proper bins. We have solved some of these external problems, so now it’s time to get all of the students back on track. We plan on installing new disposal bins, including clearly labelled garbage, paper, and bottle bins in each class room. We will also install a composting bin in the cafeteria for general use (an expansion from just the food prep waste of last year). We will ensure there are enough public recycling stands all around the school, including outside. Our goal is to purchase new bins for public areas from Clean NS or RRFB with holes shaped as the desired object. (So the paper hole would be just a slit, and the bottle hole would be just a circle, etc.) We have heard that universities have had great success with these types of bins.
If things go according to plan, as the amount of compost increases we will also produce more organic soil. We plan to use this soil in the school flower garden or perhaps to sell it to the local community as an Enviro Club fundraiser.
The Enviro club’s goal is to educate all students on the topics of the environment, how garbage affects the environment, the reasons why it is important to recycle, and about the new system being established in our school. By student-made/organized presentations and educational sessions, the Enviro club’s goal is that every student will be aware of the new program, understand their role and understand the objectives behind the program, therefore ultimately, reducing the school’s waste going to the dump.
Another one of the Enviro club’s goals is terminate the cafeteria’s use of plastic cutlery. This goal will be accomplished by meeting with cafeteria authorities and agreeing to encourage students and staff to use/bring their own metal fork. Ultimately we are going to try to get rid of plastic all together. Anyone who forgets a fork can buy one from the Enviro Club. All proceeds will go to future environmental projects.
It is our goal and desire to make the planet a better and healthier place for everyone and every creature—and we are going to start in our school.
