Coordinating Council Meeting

On Friday the 12th, the Green Teens met with the Lake Oswego School District Coordinating Council at their monthly meeting to discuss our “Don’t Be Idle Campaign”. We were given a ten-minute slot in their agenda to present our project and get their input. The purpose of our presentation was simply to introduce the idea of the project to the council, made up of the presidents of the PTA’s at the 13 schools in the district, before we take it to the School Board in October. We started out by presenting the Green Teens and the outline for our project, as well as what involvement the PTA’s and schools would have. Then we let it loose for questions. All the members of the council were very supportive of the project and had a lot of questions. We gained a lot of support, and many great ideas about how to make the campaign work.

The council provided us with a contact sheet providing the information we need to get in contact with them at a later date. Our hope is to work closely with each of them in order to better involve their school. One of the ideas that the council presented was that the project should be flexible enough to be personalized to each school. This means we will be working more closely with the individual schools, but it also means they will be more involved and interested in the project. They also mentioned that each school has an environmental coordinator, whom we will be getting in contact with soon. We even found out that one of the council members is part of a custom-sign making company that may be able to provide us the signs for the campaign.

The next stage for this project is to present it to the school administrators. In that meeting we are looking to gain the administrators’ support and ideas on the project. We also hope to get contact information for each administrator, as well as the student leadership groups at their schools. By the time we go to the School Board, our goal is to have the school community already in support of this project. After meeting with the Coordinating Council we are getting very excited for the campaign. Although we might not have planted any trees, or done any presentations yet… we have planted a seed that just keeps growing.
