On Saturday December 26, the girls and I met for three hours
at a local book store. We reflected on the overall success of their project,
deciding that their mission will continue to carry on long after the December
31 deadline – it has to - they now have a vested interested in this cause. And
most importantly, their enthusiasm has been contagious; the students, teachers,
administration and community members are all behind them now.
I will miss the late night e-mails and middle-of-the-night
ideas…” should we do this?” “will this work?” “what if?” The girls literally want to save the world and
believe they might just do it.
I have personally changed as a result of this project. My personal carbon footprint has
decreased. Every time I walk out of an
empty room the lights go off. I even teach my first period class in the dark. Well, there is ample natural lighting, of course. I have made a long list of changes. I am so
much more conscious of my impact on the environment.
My parent even got into the act. They planted extra fields of produce in addition to what they normally plant each year. They donate much of what they harvest to the church and to those in need. They composted everything they could and have really done what they can to make a difference.
The Pittsburgh Zoo has been so supportive throughout this
endeavor, not only to the girls, but to our entire school. Their outreach was so engaging; the students
were eager to make changes. I wish you
could have seen the excitement on their faces.
Bravo Molly and Kaley on a job well done!
