Without any landmarks on the vast open ice, it seems that polar bears could lose their bearings. (No pun intended.) But they know right where to go when they smell a seal!

The Three Garbateers

Season:
Fall

Adult Advisor:
Megan Guldner
Team Members:
Darci Meiners (age:17)
Amanda Ferguson (age:17)
Sara Stacy (age:17)
Project Category:
Zero Waste
Project Outline:

This project involves composting food waste from the Roger Bacon HS cafeteria and foods classes. The project will include providing a waste receptacle for the cafeteria staff, foods teacher, and cafeteria waste sites for student waste from lunches. These will be checked daily and dumped. Research will be done to determine what type of composter to install on the property, where to install on the property, & what type of care the composter will require. The composted material will be used to enrich school flower beds and the project will culminate with the planting of flower beds and a tree dedicated to the endangered polar bears. We plan on educating our students and staff about what type of material may be composted and make the process as user-friendly as possible. We plan on measuring how much trash each group makes on a weekly basis and then measuring how much trash vs. compostable waste produced. We can then do some analysis of the progress our program is making on our RB community. We are considering making a website for this program. We will advertise this on the school website.
