Satellite collars allow scientists to follow bears year after year and compare how movements vary from the past and what connection this has with a warming Arctic.

The Trash Can Patrol ("We talk trash!")

Season:
Fall

Adult Advisor:
Jane Majerac
Team Members:

Rachael Robertson (age:16)
Sarah Amick (age:17)
Project Category:
Zero Waste
Project Outline:

Currently, our school does not recycle anything - not paper, plastic, cans - anything. We'd like to take our high school and turn it green - not only implementing paper, plastic, and can recycling, but composting as well. Paralleling this, we'd like to run a campaign educating our student body about recycling and its impact on our environment, because we recognize that no amount of recycling bins can motivate students to take an active part in their environment. Utilizing all forms of multi-media, including our morning and afternoon television broadcasts, announcements, murals, posters, and the student newspaper, we hope to generate student excitement in turning our school "green". We'd like to "give a face" to recycling. Everyone understands that recycling is the environmentally conscious thing to do, but we'd like to reveal the finite positive results our conscious actions can have - results like slowing the deterioration of polar bear habitats by reducing CO2 output. We hope that our fellow students will take an active part in turning our school green. Ideas include turning our composting efforts into a student-kept garden, recruiting the art club and band and dance programs in an opportunity to showcase their talents by creatively advertising the initiative, and hosting athletic events to raise money for recycling bins, etc. Eventually, we hope to expand our efforts to our elementary school and businesses in the community.
