Update: Pledge for the Leg(islature)

It’s been an exciting time in the Manitoba political arena.  This past week our School held its 16th annual Youth Parliament and Rachael presided as Premier.  Vigorous debates, motions, and opinions were offered up in true parliamentary style.  The Speaker of the House was kept busy enforcing Points of Order!

The Hon. Greg Salinger called an emergency meeting of the MLA’s of Manitoba who would normally be ending their session.  In spite of these meetings many members made the effort to attend our Parliament after their debate.

Ron R. Schuler, Member of the Legislative Assembly, Springfield, Manitoba and his Legislative Assistant, Gladys Hayward Williams, two of the special guests invited to attend this two day event, were invited to ‘have the floor’ and share their expertise with the young parliamentarians.

Mr. Schuler took this opportunity to publically sign The Pledge for the Leg(islature) and spoke with the assembly about the importance of individual action that was both easy and attainable.  He shared both personal and political goals in making Manitoba environmentally friendly.

Shelly Glover, MP signing the Pledge

Mrs. Shelly Glover, Member of Parliament (M.P.) St. Boniface spoke with the team and was excited by the ‘political flavour’ of the Pledge.  She has offered to speak to the Members of Parliament, Canada, about CO2 reduction and the Pledge when the House reconvenes after the Christmas break.  As a former Police Officer she plans on enforcing the Pledge with her children!

These are exciting steps!  Members of the Legislative Assembly and Members of Parliament play a role in researching and writing laws for both the Province and the Country.  As constituents we wanted to make our politicians aware that Polar Bears and CO2 reduction are important to Canadians.

The OBJECTIVE: From individual change; to discussion and debate in the political arena; to being embraced as National policy.

As Shelly Glover stated:  “You coming to Us, allows US to make a difference”
