Vampire energy is the energy that is still being used after an appliance is put on stand-by mode. The Vampire Energy Slayers are out to put an end to the wasteful running of school district computers, laptops, laser printers, VCRs, and DVD players and end their harmful draining of electricity and senseless creation of excess CO2 pollution. Objectives – • Conserve energy and limit CO2 emission by encouraging Winslow Township School District employees to turn off their computers, laptops, laser printers, VCRs, and DVD players while not in use. • Have EVERY school district computer turned OFF as opposed to left on or put on stand-by at the end of each school day. • Raise awareness about wasted energy coming from computers that are left on while not in use and how it relates to CO2 emissions and polar bears. • Develop a creative method to encourage the school district to turn off their computers. • Help the younger citizens of Winslow change their energy use ways. Project – • Create attachable “Vampire” polar bear power-down reminders for every computer monitor, laptop, laser printer, VCR, and DVD in the district. • Each “Vampire” polar bear will have funny/cute/clever/witty saying that is also educational and forwarding the power down message. • We will visit the lower grades and present the schools with their official “Vampire” polar bear reminders and spread the message to the younger students about the importance of becoming a vampire energy slayer. • We will encourage school officials to support this environmental friendly way of saving polar bears AND precious school funds. Impact – • Winslow Township School District K-12 schools and administrative offices have over 500 computers, each using approximately 311 kilowatts of energy per year while in stand-by mode. If we can get those computer turned off as opposed to put on stand-by, we will save approximately 155,500 kilowatts of energy per year! If we use the estimate of 1.5 pounds of carbon emissions per kilowatt hour, we would eliminate 233,250 pounds of carbon emissions annually. • If we can get the laser printers, DVD players, VCRs turned off and unplugged we may be able to double that amount! The Vampire Energy Slayers are going to take a bite out of carbon emissions!
