Nutrition Guidelines. In 2004 at the International Polar Bear Husbandry Conference in San Diego California, it became to the participants that they needed to devise polar bear nutrition guidelines. PBI offered to help nutritionists, managers, keepers, and veterinarians representing the Bear Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) and the Polar Bear Species Survival Plan (SSP) produce them. The group met four times over a period of a year to outline all questions and areas of concern.

Standardized Animal Care Guidelines for Polar Bears. In 2007, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums published regulations for the care of polar bears in captivity based on the current art and science of animal management. The intent was to identify best practices that may positively influence and maximize the welfare of polar bears.
