My name is Patrick King. I live in the small town of Summerland, British Columbia. I go to The Glenfir School. Glenfir is a small private school that is a 7 minute drive from where I live. Glenfir is an amazing school with very small class sizes (5 other students in my grade).
I snowboard in the winter and skateboard in the summer. My true love is videography. I purchased my first camera when I was 11 and since then I have grown accustomed to having a camera permanently in my hand. I enjoy filming wildlife, wakeboarding, skateboarding, snowboarding, and so on. I make mostly short ski or snowboard flicks and have also done promotional stuff for my school. Along with video I enjoy taking still photos. This past winter I shot the FIS World Cup of Skiing for a local newspaper.
I have been to Churchill once before. I went with my mom to the tundra for a four day trip to see the Polar Bears. This trip was SO incredible. I immediately fell in love with the bears. I was able to take hours of footage of their antics.
When I am at home in Summerland I work at Tim Hortons and enjoy hanging out with freinds and going to Apex, my local ski resort.
I have not had much opportunity to learn about the hazards of global warming, and I hope to mesh my love of video with my trip to Churchill and make a difference in my community.

Wow!
Last day here with everyone. It has been tons and tons of fun! I have definitely changed over the past ten days.
I've met alot of amazing people, from fellow "sub-adults" to older people. Everyone has impacted me so much this trip!
If I told you about everything this week it would be very very long!
I think one of my most favorite parts of the week was listening to the trappers. It was so awesome how passionate they were about preserving their culture and land. It was just so cool to listen to.
Of course, right up there was seeing MC2, the mother and two cubs. That was really cool to watch their behavior together, and to listen to all the people who knew about their behaviors and such.

Today was A-MAZING! We helied about 25 minutes away from the lodge. We then crawled through a polar bear's den. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! We also jumped up and down on the bouncy tunra moss and lichen. The den was really intense! I was crawling through with my camera. Crawling with a camera in open space is hard enough, let alone sliding on your belly with a camera in hand. But it was so fun.
After our dens we headed back. On the way we saw caribou. We then had an awesome lunch. After lunch we started trying to make a mission statement. 14 kids trying to tell each other whether you should use the word EDUCATE or INSPIRE can lead to a pretty heated argument. Luckily it was all in good fun.
I have now decided some of the starting things that I plan on doing when I return home:
1.) Edit and produce a trip video and a informational/trip video.
2.) Organize a Polar Bear Night
3.) A possible week of having my video in the local cinemas.
4.) Talks and video presentations around the Okanagan.
From there I will see where this takes me.
Currently I am sitting in the lounge car listening to AFI while everyone either eats or writes their journals. Hope you enjoyed the photos at the top.

Today was a mellow but busy day. We got up, had a wonderful breakfast.
After breakfast we did presentations. After presentations we practiced for our video conference with a school in Selkirk.
Then we had lunch. After lunch our video conference took place. This was tons of fun, I thought. It felt as though we were teaching the world, even though it was just an elementary school.
After this we practiced for our presentations and then did them. Ours was the last chapter of the book.
Now we are doing our journals and getting hungry!!!

The presentation we have just had me had a line in it that impacted me so much that I thought I'd share it with the world,

TO ME THE LAND IS MY MOTHER. SHE NOURISHES ME, SO IT IS UP TO ME TO RESPECT HER!

It might not impact you as much, but the context it was used and after the presentation it was truely a moment I will remember forever.

Today was a relatively "late" morning, at least it felt like it becuase I went to bed so early yesterday. The bunks are super cool. Its like a little mini dorm.
Today we were all excited becuase we saw the Northern Lights last night, and becuase we saw Mum and cubs.
We hopped onto a buggy right after cleaning the lodge. All our teams then presented chapters 1,2 and 3 of Impacts of a Warming Arctic. It was tons of fun, and I definitely learnt tons!
After our presentations we had "noodle-chicken soup" according to Mikkeline. It was super good, and the giant muffins we had were excellent too!
Then we all got into different groups and started thinking about our next presentations.
The Mum and cubs are still outside our lodge just sleeping and moving around a little bit. I am still fascinated by the bears.

Today was another early start, but it was completely worth it. We went to Gypsy's for breakfast which was another good meal. Then we hopped on the buggy with all our stuff.
We drove and drove and drove! Then we saw arctic foxes, hares, and a POLAR BEAR!!!!! This was soo much fun.
My highlights of today were seeing all the animals and Rashad singing loudly to a Celine Dion(ish) song when the everyone was silent (the buggy had turned off and he was in mid C Sharp).
My all time favorite/funny moment was when Robert lined us all up, telling us about our duties at the lodge:
1. Kitchen
2. Cleaning
3. Honey-Bucket (You can guess what that is)
Once we were all in a line, he pulled out his hat which had the numbers 1-3 in it. He convinces us that if you show any expression when you get your number you have honey-bucket duties for all the buggies. So he starts down the line and we start picking up a number. I pick up a number, and of course, its a three. Tamara who picks the next number bursts out laughing and falls onto the chair. After hes gone through everyone all the faces have a sort of queasy look on their face. He then said, put up your hand if you got a number 3! Everyone put their hand up. I must say, you got us Robert!!!!

Today was freakishly early (5:45)!!!!! We went to Gypsies for breakfast wish was good. Then we hopped on the bus and went sight seeing around Churchill. It was very cold out of the bus, but we still went for long walks on the beach.
Then after our tour we went to the Science center. We learnt tons about all the researching that goes on there. After the science center we went to Parks Canada. Here we played a game called Polar Bear Survivor!! This was alot of fun, and it felt like we were on Jeopardy becuase of the camera.
Then we learnt all about the PBA (polar bear alert) Program. This was really interesting!
Now myself, Tamara, Jesse, Joe, and Mikkeline are sitting here waiting for dinner and looking for the nachos we didn't eat yesterday.
All for now,
Patrick!
PS...We're going out to the lodge tomorrow instead of Wednesday and getting picked up by the Helicopters while we're out there most likely..unless the helicopters come tomorrow, then we are going to the maternal den tomorrow.

Sunday October 1, 2006, 5:19 pm

Today was a very early start. Got up at six, and got down for breakfast by 6:40. Jesse and I were the only people there. By seven most of the people had come down for breakfast which was a hot/cold buffet. We then waited until 8:30 to go and check our baggage. Once we had gone through security (which was quite an ordeal) Joe and I showed Tamara and Mikkeleine Tim Hortons. They didn’t take to the Iced Caps which was a SHOCK! Then we got onto our tiny plane and took off. It was Joe’s first flight so his facial expressions wandered between happy, scared and petrified. After the smooth two hour and fifty minute flight we were in Churchill!!!!! The airport is very, very small, and they somehow managed to lose Angela’s luggage.
We then bussed down to our hotel (Aurora Inn) which is spectacular! There are two people to a room, and two floors! Mikkeleine, Joe and I hung out in our room and then went to the grocery store and bought all the ingredients for nachos. We made the BEST nachos EVER!!!!!!! Now we are just chillaxin and listening to music while we wait for 5:30 (dinner meeting time) to come.
Over and out!

This morning I woke up to Jazz music...Jazz is fine, so long as your not waking up to it. After breakfast we saw the most amazing presentations. Robert Taylor had sooo many amazing photos!!!!! I was in awe the whole time. We then picked up our box lunches and headed to a park. We walked around all the sculptures which was nice.
Then we went to the zoo which had some awesome animals, and had a fun "debate" about having captive animals.
I am definitely not looking forward to the 7am wake up!

Saturday September 30, 2006, 4:16 pm

So I got here yesterday ten minutes earlier than my flight was supposed to, so there was nobody to meet me (no hard feelings Carolyn). Soon after that the fun started happening. I met almost everyone by having a "snowball fight" with them. The snowballs were paper and we had written down our eye colour, and an adventure we had been on.
We then had some more games that were more of a discussion format. After this we had dinner. The meal was really good. About an hour after dinner. we ate a few M&M's that Shelby and Candace had pushed under their door for us.
After dinner we watched Just Freinds, actually Jesse and I only watched half the movie and then went to sleep.
Last night was AMAZING! I swam in pillows!!!!!! There are five pillows (two giant ones, tow normal ones, and one small one). It was awesome!
